Honiton interest: A late 20thC 'HONITON' aluminium boundary Road Sign, bold black lettering beneath a mid 20thC applied three dimensional circular plaque depicting the Honiton Borough Seal, set on a cream reflective painted background within a black border, paint faded on seal, paint flaking and chipped on sign, sign damaged on lower right hand side, several screw holes, 47in wide x 23¾in high (119.5cm x 73cm), Borough Seal Roundel: 14in (35.5cm) diameter.
Note: There are several interpretations of the symbols depicted on the Honiton Borough Seal, the most frequently quoted are as follows: The white glove refers to the the ancient 'Glove is up' custom whereby during the Honiton Charter Fair special rules applied - while the glove was held high on a pole no man could be arrested. The two women are St Margaret and a town's woman - at one time the women of Honiton were considered evil and were cursed with barrenness, the women were told to retreat to St Margaret's chapel to the west of the town for a day and a night of fasting and prayer, after which they conceived! The flower may be a sprig of Honeysuckle. Another interpretation is: The Annunciation - hand of God, Virgin Mary, Angel Gabriel and the Madonna Lily
